Relocating can be a "scary" adventure, so make sure you talk to your
family about the move. Visit about the new community and discuss how
to make new friends. Most important, involve your children in the
moving process, from picking out the new home to packing their toys.
Here are a few tips to help your family adjust before the move:
Make a scrapbook
Take pictures of your child in different rooms in your old home and
yard, your children’s friends, and his or her favorite places in the
neighborhood. Your children can cut, paste, and decorate the pages.
Have a good bye party
Invite friends over to celebrate the time you’ve spent together.
Have them write messages in your family scrapbook.
Say farewell to your old home
Take a last walk through the rooms of your home as you tell stories
and share family memories made in each room.
Keep kids involved
Give children their own jobs. Let them pack their toys and clothing,
label boxes, keep on top of litter, and check closets and corners
for leftover items. Keep plenty of snacks on hand.
Once you’ve arrived at your new home, it will be both exciting and
scary for your children. Here are a few easy ways to help them feel
at home more quickly.
-
Have special
items, like favorite toys, easily accessible
-
Quickly
re-establish family routines, like mealtimes and bedtimes
-
Set up the
kids’ rooms first
-
Let children
help set up their own rooms
-
Take a tour
of your new neighborhood
