Landscaping cuts energy costs
Did you know smart landscaping can do more than raise the value of
your home? It can also help you cut both summer and winter energy
costs. If you’re starting a summer landscaping project, here’s a tip
that may save you money in the long run.
Notice the path of the sun over your home and plant trees, vines and
shrubs in locations where they will provide shade, sunlight or
windbreaks.
Trees and plants are especially helpful during the hot summer
months, when they can shade your home from the sun. According to the
US Department of Agriculture, planting trees to shade your house,
especially your windows and air conditioners, can save a homeowner
up to 25% in cooling costs. Enough trees can even lower the daytime
temperature of your property by a few degrees. Use deciduous trees
and plants for shading, however, so the sun can pour in through
their bare branches during the winter. The sunlight will raise your
home’s temperature and cut heating costs during the cold months.
Evergreen trees are also helpful as windbreaks during the winter.
Plant them on the north side of your home, where they will block
your home from cold icy blasts without blocking the sun’s warmth.
I
hope you found these ideas helpful. If you have any questions about
your home or other real estate needs, feel free to give me a call or
